Baseball training today.

As competition grows and more and more players get involved with the sport of baseball, the training side of the sport evolves. Players seek to improve their game, coaches and trainers seek to improve their players, and find new improved ways of teaching the game.

With this ever changing and growing interest, come changes and trends in the landscape of facilities. At all levels from youth leagues, through college and into the professional level there has been an explosion in the number of indoor baseball and softball training facilities. These indoor batting cage facilities are giving players and coaches opportunities to train harder, and longer by taking one big factor out of the equation: Weather.

Consider this scenario as a coach; you wake up at 6 AM. Have a cup of coffee and start preparing for the day's workout...You flick on the television and the weather channel is covered with green, orange and red radar blotches. Your stomach sinks...another day of quality training lost to weather...Now contrast that with this thought: "Storming outside, no worries; send out a text...guys: Meet at the hit shack in 1 hour. Think about the ability to now take your team into your sheltered, (sometimes climate controlled), indoor baseball batting cage facility without skipping a beat.

Avoiding bad weather is not the only advantage of an indoor batting cage facility either. With a well-planned layout, and a well designed protective netting system, the space can be used for all kinds of drills, team meetings, stretching, and strength and agility training...not just hitting and pitching. With the perfection of the "Shell Style" netting system, coaches and trainers have the ability to use sliding dividers to section off areas for different activities, or even open the entire floor area up. This style netting system is far superior to the motorized raise/lower winch net systems for a several reasons: less expensive to install and maintain, less expensive material, easier and quicker to clear the floor space and still have the roof and side walls protected. Also they require no special electrical wiring.

Cost, of course play an impact, however prefabricated metal buildings are becoming more and more competitive nationwide. Then add concrete, turf, batting cage netting, protective screens, equipment, lighting, electrical, etc...Even with the up-front costs, it's being done more and more at every tier of the baseball community (especially at the collegiate level). The pre-fabricated metal building companies are prevalent, and contractors to install them are usually pretty easy to find.

These indoor training facilities have been around longer and are more common in the colder regions of the country where weather prevents training more often...but even states like Florida are seeing a big increase in covered facilities.
